Philip Neumiller was born in 1883 in the Ukraine city of Odessa, Russia.  In his early years, Philip moved to Wilhelstahl, now a municipality of Bavaria, Germany.  In 1908 at age 25, he immigrated to Argentina.  On the ship he met Marie Sophie Jacobi.  They married in Argentina on November 8, 1908 and a few years later, sailed to America landing at the Port of New Orleans July 21, 1910.

Nine children were born of Phillip and Marie:  John was born in Argentina; Phillip and Mary in Illinois; William and Esther in Canada; Emma and Fred in Greeley, Colorado; and Ray and Reinhold in Wisconsin.

After living in several areas of the U.S. and Canada, the Neumiller family moved to Wisconsin and settled in Somers Township in a house on Meyer Lane.

As young men, Fred Neumiller and his brother engaged in potato farming which expanded into potato brokerage, trucking, and warehousing.  They sold to major companies such as Frito Lay and Campbell's Soup.

In 1947, Fred Neumiller married Lois Elaine Scheckler.  To this marriage, six children were born.  Lois Scheckler was the daughter of Emory and Helen Thompson Scheckler, early pioneers and prominent farmers in the Berryville area of Somers Township.  Emory and Helen had seven children:  Lois Scheckler Neumiller, Hazel Scheckler Gitzlaff, Alice Scheckler Meyer, Verna Scheckler, and Donald, Emory and Richard Scheckler.

Neumiller Farms operated their business in the "heart of the village" of Somers for many years on the former property of Matt Rasmussen, Somers' own "cabbage king".  In 1974, Fred Neumiller relocated his potato farming location to Illinois where he discovered abundant available land near the Mississippi River where the sandy soil was ideal for irrigation, a perfect combination for maximizing potato crop production.  Today, Neumiller Farms, Inc. operated farms in Savanna, Cordova, Erie, and Bath, Illinois.

Hansche, William F.

(Source: Portrait and Biographical Album of Racine and Kenosha Counties. Lake City Publishing Co. Chicago. 1892

William F. Hansche
William F. Hansche, who is successfully engaged in farming in Somers Township, Kenosha County, Wisconsin was born in Racine County on the 23rd of March, 1861, a son of William C. and Mary (Heck) Hansche, natives of Germany.  The father’s birth occurred in June, 1827, and after completing the public school course he learned the wagon maker’s trade in the fatherland.  In 1840 he accompanied his parents, William and Sophia Hansche. On their emigration to America the family took passage on a sailing vessel which was completely wrecked off the island of Haiti and all of the passengers were compelled to stay in San Domingo for twenty-one weeks.  In the fall the family succeeded in reaching New York and thence went to Cleveland, Ohio, where they spent five years.  While living there they met Huron Beebe, who had a farm near Racine, Wisconsin, and who induced them to settle in Racine County.  William Hansche successfully engaged in farming there until his demise, which occurred in 1873, when he was sixty-eight years old.  He was survived until 1874 by his wife.  They were the parents of three sons and one daughter.  William C. Hansche, the father of our subject, became the owner of land in Racine County and gained recognition as one of the most practical and efficient agriculturists of his locality.  His political allegiance was given to the Republican party.  He was well known and his demise, which occurred in 1893, was deeply regretted.  In 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Heck, a daughter of Philip Heck, and five children were born to them, namely; William F;  Fred;  Louis,  Katie, who married Ernest Scheckler; and Sophia, the wife of Augustus J. Piper.
William F. Hansche received a good education, attending school until was eighteen years of age, when he turned his entire attention to assisting his father with the farm work, being so engaged for eight years.  When twenty-six years old he purchased sixty-five acres of land on Section 5, Somers Township, and has since increased his holdings until his farm now comprises one hundred acres, all of which is under cultivation.  He has made all of the excellent improvements on the place and has taken great pride in making his farm one of the best developed in his Township.  He uses up-to-date methods in his work and gains a good income from his land.
In May, 1890, Mr. Hansche was united in marriage to Miss Jane Piper, and they have two children;  Harvey, who married Etna Halter, a daughter of Henry Halter, of Mount Pleasant; and Lucille, who is at home.
Mr. Hansche supports the Republican part at national elections but at other times votes independently.  He is a member of the Woodmen camp at Somers, and in religious faith is a Methodist.  He has thoroughly identified his interests with those of his community and can be depended upon to advance the public good in any possible.

Krueger

Christian Friedrick and Louisa Klapproth Krueger
(Photo Source:  City and Kenosha County Record of Settlement by Frank H. Lyman, Vol. II, Chicago, S.J. Clarke 1916)

Christian Friedrich Krueger
C.F. Kreuger, who is a highly esteemed resident of Somers Township, has been identified with agricultural interests in Kenosha County for many years and is now living retired, having gained a competence by his well directed labors.  His birth occurred in Germany in 1837, and he received a good common school education that country.  Later he learned the wagon maker’s trade, which he followed successfully until he was thirty-one years of age, when, in 1868, he emigrated to the United States.  He at once made his way to the middle west and for four years worked at his trade in Racine, Wisconsin, at the end of which time he purchased sixty-three acres on Section 6, Somers Township, Kenosha County, where he has since resided.  In the meantime, however, he disposed of part of his land but still holds title to twenty-nine acres.  He has improved his farm in various ways and while actively engaged in agricultural pursuits he was recognized as one of the most progressive and most successful farmers of his locality.  He managed his business affairs well and practiced thrift and in time gained a competence that now enables him to enjoy a period of leisure.
In 1868 occurred the marriage of Mr. Krueger to Miss Louisa Klapproth and they became the parents of eight children but only three survive, namely Mathilde, (Tillie) now Mrs. Frank Linstroth, who has four children: Emma, now Mrs. William Scheckler, who resides in Racine and has three children; Herman F. who married Lydia Limper and is farming in Somers Township.
Mr. Krueger believes in the principles of the Republican Party but at local elections supports the best man irrespective of his political affiliation.  His religious faith in indicated by his membership on the Evangelical Association  and has many sterling traits of character have gained him the respect of all who know him.  The success which he has gained is due entirely to his own efforts as when he began his independent career he had neither capital nor influential friends.

On  June 22, 1881, Henry Halter, son of Louis Halter, a cabinetmaker in Germany who came to America in the 1830's, married Miss Emma Swantz in 1881.  Emma died in 1882 at age twenty-two.  Mr. Halter married (second) in May 1891, Miss Fredericka Scheckler, daughter of John G. and Mary (Birch) Scheckler.  Two children have been born to this marriage, Edna, who married Harvey Hansche, and Frank.

Mrs. John Scheckler's 85th Birthday
December 6th marked the 85th birthday of Mrs. John Scheckler, one of the oldest and best known settlers of Berryville (lived on Lake Shore Road).  The event was held in her home.  When all had been seated for the evening meal, Mrs. Scheckler's oldest son, Ernest of Chicago, entered the dining room with a large birthday cake ornamented with red, white, and blue candles in the figure of 85.  As he carried it in, he offered this toast:  "Mother, you're another year older today.  Another year dearer, too.  Should you live to be 100 years, it would still be too few."
At Mrs. Scheckler's plate was a blooming plant sent by her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Near of Minneapolis who was unable to be present.  Many other beautiful gifts were evidences of loving remembrances.
Mrs. Scheckler came to this country in 1857 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hansche, her maiden name being Elizabeth Hansche.  They settled in the Township of Mt. Pleasant and in 1858 Mrs. Scheckler became united in marriage with John David Scheckler, whose death occurred in 1883.
Since her marriage, 51 years ago (about 1867), she has always resided on the same farm.  All of her seven children are living and have been very successful.  She is also the proud grandmother of 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  The children who attended the reunion are Ernest G. and John H. Scheckler both of Chicago, Illinois; Mrs. C.H. (Minnie) Bradley, and Fred W. Scheckler of Racine; and George Scheckler, residing on the farm.  Mrs. Elizabeth Near of Minneapolis and William H. Scheckler of Davenport, Iowa were not in attendance.  Mrs. John Hansche of  Mt. Pleasant, sister of Mrs. Scheckler, was among the guests.

About John G. Scheckler (son) born 1851
"The strange story of a man who has been missing from Kenosha County for more than 40 years and of whom not a single trace has been found in four decades was brought to light in the county court on Tuesday when Judge George Taylor handed down a formal order declaring that John Scheckler, formerly of the Town of Somers, and a son of the late John G. Scheckler, was "legally dead" and named Carl Scheckler, a brother, as administrator of the estate of the "dead" man.  The estate is valued at $2,500 and under the order of the court it will be divided between the brothers and sisters on the long missing man.
John Scheckler was 22 years of age when he disappeared from his father's home in the Town of Somers in 1873.  At the time he stated that he was going to some point in Michigan.  There had been no trouble between the son and the father, but he left Somers in order to seek a fortune in another state.  No word was ever heard from the son after he left his father's home."

"Says the Vincennes, Indiana Sunday Commercial, under date of November 7, 1915:  W.H. Scheckler and son, Guy, of Racine, Wisconsin, were in the city yesterday.  Mr. Scheckler and son are touring from their home to Miami, Florida where they will remain until next June.  They are making the trip in a Case 35 and report that they have had no trouble so far.  They say that the roads in Indiana are the best they have gone over on their journey.  Mr. Scheckler stated that he was in the city some four months ago looking after some real estate and that upon entering the city was hardly able to recognize it on account of the vast improvements which have taken place.  They left Sunday morning at an early hour for Evansville from which point they will continue their journey southward and if conditions are favorable they expect to reach their destination in about two weeks.

More About George Scheckler
George Sheckler, son of John Sheckler, was born on the old family homestead in Mt. Pleasant township on January 14, 1873 and at the usual age entered the district schools, continuing his education there until he reached the age of sixteen.  He was a lad of but ten years when his father died and after his textbooks were put aside he worked on the old homestead and afterward took over the management of the property, upon which he has since lived, having thirty two acres of land which he devotes to truck gardening.  The vegetables which he produces are of fine size and quality and therefore find a ready sale on the market.  In all his business dealings he is thoroughly reliable, his transactions ever measuring up to honorable standards.
On the 8th of March 1900 Mr. Sheckler was married to Miss Grace Dearsley, daughter of William and Lena  (Wyman) Dearsley( also a pioneer of Berryville), and they have two children: Irwin and Ethel.  George Sheckler votes with the Republican party, has served as a member of the school board, and belongs to the Methodist Church.

Alfred J. Hansche, the second son of Frederick J. Hansche, now occupies and cultivates the old home farm in connection with his brother, Samuel H. He was born in Mount Pleasant township, February 28, 1874, and attended the district schools until he reached the age of sixteen or seventeen years. He then went to Racine, where he was employed for nine years in the meat market of A. J. Sheckler but on the expiration of that period he returned to the home farm, of which he has since had charge in connection with his brother. They have carefully and systematically cultivated the place, which is largely devoted to the raising of vegetables, and for their product they find a ready sale on the market. The work is systematically and scientifically carried on. They have studied the needs of the soil, know where the best results can be achieved for each crop and their annual sales now amount to a large figure.

In 1904 Alfred J. Hansche was married to Miss Jennie Bose, a daughter of William F. And Nellie (Breaid) Bose. Two children have been born to this marriage, Dorothy and George, who are with their parents on the old homestead, and in the community the family is regarded most highly, occupying a position of prominence and influence. In his political views Mr. Hansche is an earnest republican, while his religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal church. His record, like that of the others of the Hansche family, is most creditable and through more than half a century the Hansches have borne a helpful and important part in the work of developing and improving this section of the state.

A.J. Scheckler is Offered $18,000 for Property
It was reported this  morning that A.J. Scheckler, owner of the old Star Mill property, corner of Main and Second Streets, had been offered $18,000 for the property.  Mr. Scheckler was called up by telephone and admitted that an offer was made for the building, but he refused to tell by whom, or what was offered.  He further said that the property was not for sale.  The belief prevails that the Hamilton-Beach Co. are the parties who made the offer.  The company is looking for a central location and in case they secure it intend to erect a modern factory building.

About John Sheckler (note spelling on this document)
"For twenty-seven years John Sheckler was actively identified with farming interests in Racine county, where he took up his abode in 1856.  He was born in Germany in 1836 and after acquiring a common school education in that country came to the United States at the age of twenty years, hoping that might enjoy and benefit by some of the advantages which he heard were offered in the new world to young men of enterprise and industry.  He made his way at once to the county and took up the occupation of farming, in which he was actively engaged to the time of his demise, making his home in Mt. Pleasant township, where he brought his fields to a high state of cultivation, transforming his land into a rich and productive tract.
In 1859 Mr. Scheckler was married to Miss Elizabeth Hansche, a daughter of Ernest and Kathrina Hansche, who were early settlers of this county.  Mr. and Mrs. Sheckler became the parents of seven children, namely:  Ernest, Fred, Elizabeth, John, Minnie, William and George.  In his political views Mr. Sheckler was a Republican, supporting the party from the time that he became a naturalized American citizen.  His religious faith was evidenced in his membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was a believer in the public school system and for three years served on the school board, doing everything in his power to make the school in his district one which would be of value in preparing young people for life's practical and responsible duties.  He died on the 2d of January 1883, at the comparatively early age of forty-seven years, but left a family to continue the good work which he had begun.
